The 3 Best Electrolyte Drinks, According to Pharmacists

Many people are sweating through a fierce heatwave that has gripped a large portion of the country. Such unrelenting hot weather raises the risk of dehydration, a dangerous and potentially life-threatening condition.

Dehydration can lead to an electrolyte imbalance, but several types of drinks promise both rehydration and restoration of electrolyte levels. Now, pharmacists are weighing in about the brands that offer the most effective versions of these drinks.

Recently, 401 pharmacists weighed in about the best drinks for dehydration relief as part of the third annual BrandSpark/Newsweek Most Trusted by Pharmacists Awards.

Those pharmacists say the three best electrolyte drinks are:

  • Pedialyte
  • Liquid I.V.
  • Gatorade

Pedialyte provides three important electrolytes — sodium, chloride and potassium — to keep you hydrated. According to manufacturer Abbott:

“Unlike water and sports drinks, Pedialyte has an optimal balance of sugar and sodium to help replenish fluids and electrolytes more effectively.”

Liquid I.V. is a drink mix that you add to water, and Gatorade is an iconic sports drink familiar to anyone who has ever watched a major sporting event.

In the same BrandSpark/Newsweek survey, the pharmacists offered their choices for the best cold and flu medicines. For more, check out “The Cold and Flu Medications That Pharmacists Trust Most.”
