The 20 Highest-Ranked U.S. Hospitals in 2022

A household name — the Mayo Clinic — remains at the top of the medical field, according to U.S. News & World Report’s latest annual Best Hospitals in the USA rankings.

The publication says the Rochester, Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic is the top U.S. hospital, followed by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The Cleveland Clinic, which last year took the runner-up spot, fell to No. 4.

The Best Hospitals in the USA rankings — the 33rd that U.S. News has released — span 15 adult specialties, 10 pediatric specialties and 20 surgical procedures and medical conditions. U.S. News says it evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across the nation.

According to the publication:

“The Best Hospitals methodology and Procedures & Conditions methodology factor objective measures such as survival rates, patient experience, level of nursing care and how successfully each hospital helps patients get back home.”

The list of Best Hospitals in the USA is important because patients of all kinds want to find the top specialty treatments available. Whether someone is in search of cancer treatment or heart surgery, having a ranked list of the top hospitals can bring peace of mind during difficult times.

The 2022-23 rankings do not reflect the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on U.S. hospitals, however. They are partially based on data from a time period prior to the pandemic, and “to mitigate the impact of COVID-19-pandemic-associated disruptions on outcome measures, several exclusions were applied to visits occurring in 2020,” U.S. News says.

Of the hospitals included in U.S. News’ analysis, 20 made what the publication calls its “Best Hospitals Honor Roll.” U.S. News says the following hospitals “excel across most or all types of care”:
