Savvy shoppers know that membership in an organization such as AARP or AAA comes with a wide variety of benefits. But even the shrewdest consumers overlook some perks that can save them a bundle.
For example, if you are a member of some nonprofits or clubs, you are probably eligible for discounts on car insurance that could put a nice dent in your driving expenses.
In fact, a bunch of organizations offer this perk. Following are several memberships that offer car insurance discounts.
1. AARP
This nonprofit interest group for folks age 50 and older offers its members savings through the AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford.
Members can get up to 10% off their premium, among other discounts for things like bundling policies.
2. AAA
This nonprofit service organization offers car insurance discounts to members, although the details may vary from one regional AAA club to another. As just one example of savings, AAA says member discounts can save drivers as much as 8% in Washington state.

3. Alumni associations
If you belong to an alumni association — or if you have the option to join one — ask either the association or your current car insurance company whether discounts are available tomembers of that alumni association.
For example, the benefits of membership in the alumni association of Penn State University include savings of up to 10% on auto insurance with Liberty Mutual.
Geico also offers savings to members of certain alumni associations, all of which are listed on Geico’s “Alumni Associations, Colleges, and Universities” webpage.
4. Wholesale clubs
If you belong to a wholesale club, ask about car insurance discounts for members.
Costco, for example, partners with American Family Insurance to offer auto insurance discounts. Not all members save money, the fine print states. But among those who do, the average savings is $595.86 the first year they switch, according to Costco’s website.
Additionally, BJ’s Wholesale Club partners with Liberty Mutual.
5. All kinds of other organizations
If you belong to something — seemingly anything — there very well may be an insurer out there with a car insurance discount for you.
The insurance information website EverQuote reports that other types of organizations possibly offering car insurance discounts for members include:
- Business groups
- Military organizations
- Educators groups
- Law enforcement organizations
