25 States Raising Their Minimum Wage in 2024

Another new year means raises in dozens of states for those who make the minimum wage.

Half of U.S. states are bumping their minimum wages higher in 2024, according to a roundup from Paycor, a company that creates human resources software.

Some of these states are gradually raising their minimum wage over a period of years with the goal of topping out at $15 an hour. Several other states (and Washington, D.C., where the minimum wage is $17) already have a minimum wage that is at or above $15.

Other states do not have a $15 goal but are hiking their minimum wages nonetheless.

Following are the states that are raising their minimum wages in 2024. Each state is listed with its new minimum wage, followed by the 2023 rate in parentheses. Increases are effective Jan. 1, 2024, unless otherwise stated.

  1. Alaska: $11.73 (up from $10.85)
  2. Arizona: $14.35 (up from $13.85)

  12. Michigan: $10.33 (up from $10.10)
  13. Minnesota: $10.85 for businesses with annual revenue of at least $500,000 and $8.85 for businesses with annual revenue of less than $500,000 (up from $10.59 and $8.63, respectively)
  14. Missouri: $12.30 (up from $12)
  15. Montana: $10.30 (up from $9.95)
  16. Nebraska: $12 (up from $10.50)
  17. Nevada: $12, effective July 1, 2024 (up from $10.25 or $11.25, depending on whether an employer offers health benefits, a two-tiered system that ends with the 2024 increase)
  18. New Jersey: $15.13 for businesses with six or more employees and $13.73 for businesses with less than six employees (up from $14.13 and $12.93, respectively)
  19. New York: $15 or $16, depending on the area (up from $14.20 or $15)
  20. Ohio: $10.45 (up from $10.10)
  21. Oregon: Varies by location and increases based on the inflation rate, with annual increases being determined by April 30 each year and taking effect July 1 (up from $13.20 to $15.45)
  22. Rhode Island: $14 (up from $13)
  23. South Dakota: $11.20 (up from $10.80)
  24. Vermont: $13.67 (up from $13.18)
  25. Washington: $16.28 (up from $15.74)

Again, several states have set out to reach a $15 minimum wage. New Jersey reaches it in 2024, with most workers making a minimum of $15.13.

Maryland is also hitting that target in 2024 — earlier than planned. The state previously intended to gradually increase its minimum wage until it reached $15 for large employers by 2025 and for smaller employers by 2026. However, the minimum wage for all employers in the state — regardless of size — is $15 as of Jan. 1, 2024.

Other states that have set the $15 benchmark (and the year they plan to achieve that wage) include:

  • Delaware (2025)
  • Florida (2026)
  • Illinois (2025)
  • Rhode Island (2025)
  • Virginia (2026)
