2 States That Got Their First Costco This Year — and 2 Still Waiting

It might seem like Costco is everywhere, but that’s not exactly true.

Two states got their first stores just this year — and two others remain Costco-free.

On Nov. 17, Costco opened its first store in Maine. The store is located in Scarborough, just south of Portland. Reports said hundreds of people waited outside the door just to get a first look at the retailer’s new location.

Costco said about 8,000 people paid for memberships in the week leading up to the store’s opening.

In August, reports emerged that Costco was building its first store in Rhode Island.

In an Aug. 23 press release, Cranston Mayor Kenneth J. Hopkins announced that “formal steps are being rolled out this week that will soon lead to the establishment of a Costco Wholesale facility in Cranston.”

A new Costco store in Maine and one planned in Rhode Island mean 48 of the 50 states have Costco locations or soon will.

That means just two states — West Virginia and Wyoming — do not have a Costco location.

There are 136 Costco locations in California — by far the most of any state. By contrast, several places have just one Costco. They include:

  • Arkansas
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Maine
  • Mississippi
  • New Hampshire
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont

Costco is one of the most beloved retailers in America. But it helps to know a few things if you want to get the most out of your shopping trips there.
